Aadhaar for NRI – Linking your Aadhaar to bank account, then mobile and now it’s your insurance policies. Move seems to be good, but what about NRI? Aadhaar for NRI is not correct as per the law.
Should NRI link services with Aadhaar?
I was told by my bank to link my bank account to linked to Aadhaar. I am an NRI and I was finding it difficult to get one, but with great difficulty I could get one.
Later, I came to know that Aadhaar is only for resident Indians and I am not supposed to get an Aadhaar. I had checked with many of my NRI friends and found that they all had got one.
Here is the clarification
I have already linked my Aadhaar with my mobile, but not the bank accounts as I got a communication from my bank that I do not have to.
Insurance policies will have to be linked mandatorily with Aadhaar. This has been said by insurance regulator IRDAI (Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India). While Aadhaar is already compulsory for many essential tasks, you will now be required to link insurance policies with Aadhaar card. Insurance regulator IRDAI asked insurers – general and life – to implement the rules without awaiting further instructions. An Aadhaar-insurance policy linkage is mandated under the Prevention of Money-laundering (Maintenance of Records) Second Amendment Rules, 2017, the regulator said in a statement dated November 8, 2017. “These rules have statutory force and, as such, life and general insurers (including standalone health insurers) have to implement them without awaiting further instructions,” IRDA said.
